Jesus Simal-Gandara, Professor, PhD, Research Expert of the Institute of Food Science and Technology, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences.


Main Research Areas: chromatographic separations (GC-MS and LC-MS), molecular biology, and proteomics.

Main Research Directions: (1) the distribution of agricultural and environmental organic chemical contaminants in the food production chain; (2) to improve the sensory and functional quality of food, with a concentrate on the global food chain, integrating environment, agriculture, and food with nutrition and public health issues; (3) the study of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) from the point of view of public health (epidemiology, toxicity of mixtures, metabolites); (4) the study of secondary metabolites in plant foods, exploring the molecular mechanisms.


He is the professor of Nutrition and Food Science at the University of Vigo's Faculty of Food Science and Technology (Spain). He was the Head of the Department of Analytical Chemistry and Food Science at the University of Vigo between 2013 and 2018. In 2018, he served as the Vice-Chancellor for Internationalization at the University of Vigo. He was Member of the Scientific Committee of the Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition - AESAN (2013- 2014) and of the Scientific Committee of the Spanish Agency for Consumers, Food Safety and Nutrition – AECOSAN (2015-2016). Now, he is the president of the “International Association of Dietary Nutrition and Safety (IADNS), and the Full Member of the Royal Academy of Pharmacy of Galicia. In addition, he was granted Research Medal 2020 "Antonio Casares Rodríguez" (Chemistry and Geology) of the Royal Academy of Science of Galicia. He has published more than 500 papers in journals such as Food Chemistry, Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition, Comprehensive Reviews in Food Science and Food Safety, Biomedicine & Pharmacotherapy, Cancer Cell International, etc. His article cited over 21,800 times, and his H-index is 75, as a Highly Cited Researcher. He is the editor of 4 national books. He has contributed chapters to 10 national and 14 international books. He directed 18 doctoral dissertations, and published a number of publications in high-impact academic journals together with the Institute of Food Science and Technology, the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences:
